Position description
We’re Hiring: Chief Development Officer
Grand Canyon Council – Scouting America | Based in Scottsdale, AZ
Lead transformational philanthropy. Fuel Arizona’s next generation of leaders.
Do you believe that bold, character-centered youth leadership programs are more important than ever? Are you an experienced fundraiser and team builder who wants to drive strategy, lead with purpose, and help grow one of Arizona’s most dynamic nonprofit organizations?
Grand Canyon Council, Scouting America is looking for our next Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead our fundraising team, shape strategy, and grow our revenue beyond $2.5 million annually. You’ll report directly to the CEO and serve as a key member of our senior leadership team, overseeing all development functions—from major and planned gifts to corporate sponsorships, events, stewardship, and donor communications.
This is a rare opportunity to take the reins of a high-potential program and lead it to new heights. With a strong foundation in place, a collaborative and capable team, and a bold roadmap (we call it ScoutingAZPhilanthropy), we’re looking for a CDO who can drive growth, energize relationships, and lead with clarity and heart.
What You’ll Do
• Serve as a strategic leader, helping drive the next era of council-wide philanthropy
• Lead and mentor a talented team of development professionals (4 frontline + 2 support)
• Manage your own portfolio of major donors and partners—you’ll be out in the community, not behind a desk
• Oversee annual appeals, planned giving, events, sponsorships, and campaigns
• Champion a culture of stewardship, gratitude, and authentic connection
• Help grow visibility and investment through the ScoutingAZPhilanthropy brand
What We’re Looking For
• You’ve led high-performing teams and raised $1M+ annually across multiple channels
• You’re passionate about youth development, values-based leadership, and making a real difference
• You’re a collaborator, coach, and communicator—equally at ease with your team, a donor, or a board member
• You’re data-savvy and fluent in CRM systems (Blackbaud preferred)
• You’re inspired by a big vision—but grounded in execution and accountability
The Details
• Location: Based in Scottsdale, AZ with up to 40% statewide travel
• This role is primarily in-person, with time spent in the office and out meeting with donors and volunteers
• Compensation: Competitive market-based salary plus performance-based bonus
• Benefits:
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 403(b) retirement plan with matching
- Monthly mileage and phone stipend
- 13 paid holidays, paid sick time, and a generous vacation policy that increases with tenure
Why Grand Canyon Council?
We’re the local face of Scouting America in Arizona—reaching thousands of families each year through leadership programs rooted in service, resilience, and adventure. We’re forward-looking, inclusive, and committed to excellence. Our team culture is fast-paced but supportive, and we take our mission seriously—without taking ourselves too seriously.
We’re building something meaningful—and we’d love for you to be part of it.
