NMI 105: High Impact Leadership (March 2025)

In this course, you will be introduced to several models of leadership and leadership styles to advance your knowledge and skills as a nonprofit professional. By engaging in guided discussion and focused activities, you will begin to identify your leadership strengths and core values and learn what motivates followers. Additionally, you will develop a leadership action plan for achieving personal and organizational impact.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish key differences between leadership and management.
  • Discuss leadership philosophies and their applications.
  • Examine the various characteristics of effective leaders.
  • Assess your own leadership according to characteristics of great leaders.
  • Explore a variety of leadership styles, including their defining characteristics, applications, and potential effects.
  • Explore the leadership skills that get results vs. those that are less successful.
  • Distinguish between core and adaptive leadership skills.
  • Explore the process of connecting personal development with leadership transformation.

This course will consist of article reading, discussion questions, authentic assessments, and self-tests to enhance learning and build upon prior knowledge.

NMI courses are taught using the Canvas learning management system and include a variety of multimedia tools and resources. To ensure you can successfully access the multimedia tools in your courses, we recommend you use a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop. Mobile devices are not recommended. In this course, participants will be introduced to current models of leadership and seven core leadership competencies. By using a self-analysis tool, you will be able to identify your leadership strengths and core values. In addition, you will also learn methods for building internal and external relationships and applying those skills to a business setting. Finally, you will also develop a leadership action plan for achieving personal and organizational impact.

Jeri Royce currently serves as President & CEO for Advance Community (formerly Esperança), a global health organization advancing health equity by connecting needs and resources internationally and in Arizona. Jeri is an accomplished leader with a distinguished career leading operational, business development, program development/management, and human resource functions. With over 30 years of experience in local and national nonprofit organizations, she has a successful track record of building a leading strong partnerships and highly successful teams. Prior to Advance, Jeri operated her own consulting firm, 3P-Leadership, specializing non-profit capacity building through leadership development, team building, individual/group coaching services, Interim Executive Director/CEO Services, and serving as a consultant for Virginia Piper Trust in the ATLAS and Good Governance programs. Prior to relocating to Arizona 20 year ago, Jeri served in a variety of leadership roles with Points of Light Foundation and American Symphony Orchestra League in Washington DC.

Outside of Advance, Jeri inspires hope in the Valley by serving as a board member for the newly merged Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and AZ Grantmakers organization, a long-time mentor to an at-risk teen with New Pathways for Youth and was selected for the prestigious Virginia Piper Fellowship class of 2022.
