Mission Statement

Shape Up Us is committed to “Building a Healthier Future for Our Children” by empowering children, families, and communities through educational programs that promote lifelong wellness. Our comprehensive approach—AWARENESS! EDUCATION! ACTION!—focuses on physical activity, nutrition, mental and emotional well-being, and social-emotional learning to create healthier, happier lives.

Board Member Role and Responsibilities

As a Board Member of Shape Up US, you will serve as a strategic advisor, community advocate, and ambassador for our mission. Board members help shape the organization’s direction, ensure financial sustainability, and amplify our reach through leadership, resources, and network connections.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Mission & Strategy
  • Uphold and advocate for Shape Up US’s mission, vision, and values. 
  • Provide strategic guidance and contribute to long-term planning. 
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, including Family Fun Community Events, The Hip Hop Healthy Heart Program for Children, and Clap4Health! Eat Right, Move More Walking Program,
  • Meetings: Attend a monthly 1-hour one-on-one meeting with the executive director, and a 1-hour quarterly board meeting as a group (virtual).
• Fundraising & Resource Development: 
  • Contribute to Shape Up US financially at a personally meaningful level. 
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives and introductions to potential donors, sponsors, and partners. 
  • Help identify and cultivate partnerships to expand our impact. 
• Advocacy & Outreach: 
  • Serve as a public champion for Shape Up Us programs and events. 
  • Share Shape Up Us initiatives through personal and professional networks. 
  • Attend or support at least one major community event annually.
• Board Development: 
  • Help recruit and mentor new board members aligned with our mission. 
  • Participate in ongoing board training or development activities.

Qualifications: 

Board Members should possess a passion for Shape Up US’s mission and a commitment to improving the health and wellness of children, families, and communities. Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications: 

• Commitment to Mission: A demonstrated belief in Shape Up US’s goals of health education, disease prevention, and community empowerment. 
• Leadership Experience: Prior experience serving on a board or in leadership roles within nonprofits, education, healthcare, public health, business, or government is a plus.
• Fundraising Support: Willingness to contribute personally and support fundraising efforts through outreach, sponsorships, or donor cultivation.
• Strategic Thinking: Ability to offer valuable insights into organizational planning, program development, and community engagement.
• Advocacy Skills: Comfortable speaking publicly and representing Shape Up Us in a positive, professional manner.
• Collaborative Spirit: A team-oriented mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to work respectfully and effectively with others.
• Time Commitment: Availability to participate in quarterly board meetings, respond to organizational needs, and support events and initiatives as needed. Estimated monthly time commitment: 1 hour, one-on-one with the executive director, and 1 hour quarterly with the group. 
• Term Commitment:  
• Board Members serve a renewable two-year term.
