About the Heard Museum:

The Heard Museum is the largest private museum in the world dedicated to American Indian art. Our mission is to connect Indigenous creativity to the world by presenting the voice and vision of American Indian artists. Founded in 1929, the Heard – one of the largest and oldest cultural organizations in Arizona, sits on an 8-acre downtown Phoenix campus, houses a permanent collection of more than 45,000 works of Indigenous creation, and is a member of the American Alliance of Museums and the Association of Art Museum Directors. The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and USA Today have all ranked the Heard among the best museums in the United States. 

Opportunity Summary:

The Manager of Individual Giving plays a critical role in raising $1-2M annually from individual donors to the Heard Museum. Reporting to the Director of Development, this position manages the museum’s ongoing efforts to identify, recruit, engage, and steward mid- and high-level gifts from individual donors, including the Board of Trustees. This includes conducting research, crafting and implementing giving plans, and supporting the development of resources and events that enable museum Board and staff leadership to do the same. To succeed in the position, the Manager of Individual Giving will work with colleagues across the Development and Membership department, as well as individuals across the entire institution. This position will maintain and steward a distinct portfolio of donors and prospects. Leading up to the Heard’s centennial anniversary in 2029, the Manager of Individual Giving will strongly support the museum’s efforts through a capital and endowment campaign.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Donor Identification & Stewardship

  • Maintains a managed list of donors and prospects to support operations, programs and capital campaign, and tracks managed prospect lists for colleagues, Trustees, and others
  • Supports an ongoing, data-driven prospecting process that informs own and colleagues’ work, including Trustees
  • Analyzes donor data to inform prospect/donor strategies
  • Assists with developing goals, plans, and metrics for prospect / donor development
  • Supports research and the development of reports to inform fundraising strategies
  • Supports the development of ongoing tracking system/metrics for prospect advancement
  • Facilitates regular check-ins with prospect managers to assess progress towards goals and to identify needs for support

Board of Trustees & Major Donors

  • Ideates and implements strategies to sustain Trustee and major donor engagement with the museum’s mission and activities
  • Provides support and assists with strategy and resource development for Trustees and major donors engaged in the museum’s fundraising efforts
  • Monitors Trustee annual giving to ensure minimum commitments are met
  • Documents and seeks to leverage Trustee and major donor relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations
  • Supports the timely and thoughtful delivery of gift acknowledgements and other critical stewardship needs

Capital Campaign

  • Plans and implements capital campaign meetings, campaign resources, campaign materials, and other efforts to support campaign leadership, Trustees, and other stakeholders
  • Organizes and oversees ongoing communications with campaign council, leadership and others. This will involve coordination with colleagues
  • Coordinates wealth screenings, other third-party plug-ins and data integration with external vendors in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Additional roles may be identified as the capital campaign continues to develop.

Events & Special Funding Initiatives

  • Serves as a primary fundraising contact for: the museum’s fundraising gala (Moondance); the annual Best of Show campaign; and, for ongoing special/targeted fundraising appeals.
  • For each event/initiative, this includes assisting with prospecting efforts, committee & chair management, developing and implementing funding packages, collateral and event communications/mailings with leadership and internal stakeholders, and ensuring benefit fulfillment.
  • Supports event logistical needs & donor engagement by attending and staffing events.
  • Helps to plan, organize and implement the Membership Admission Tent(s) for annual weekend events such as Hoop Dance Contest and Guild Indian Fair & Market. Supports Advancement Development with VIP/Members Tent for these events. Additional roles may be identified as new funding initiatives are developed.

    Qualifications

    Experience Requirements:

    • Three years of direct experience in development / fundraising.
    • Must be a self-starter and able to build collegial, friendly relationships with internal and external constituents.
    • Must be able to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
    • Experience working with databases a plus.
    • Knowledge of American Indian art, culture, and peoples a plus.

    Education:

    • College degree from a four-year institution required

    Employment Requirements:

    • Background Check required.

    Math:

    • This position requires some statistical analysis to identify trends in data, as well as intermediate level math skills for revenue reporting.
