Position Summary: The Controller oversees the financial management and reporting processes of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society. This role ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, oversees financial operations, and provides strategic financial support to further the organization’s mission. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

1. Financial Management & Reporting 

  • Manage the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. 

  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes. 

  • Prepare and present financial statements to the board of directors, leadership team, and stakeholders. 

  • Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), especially as they apply to nonprofit organizations. 

  • Monitor and manage restricted and unrestricted funds.  

  • Perform bank reconciliations 

  • Review transactions for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with US GAAP 

  • Perform month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations, maintaining workpapers monthly 

  • Prepare journal entries and accruals as needed monthly 

  • Review payroll and prepare monthly payroll entries 

2. Budgeting & Forecasting 

  • Develop and manage the organization’s annual budget in collaboration with leadership. 

  • Prepare financial forecasts to support strategic decision-making. 

  • Track and report variances between budgeted and actual results, providing recommendations to improve financial outcomes. 

3. Grants & Funding Management 

  • Ensure proper accounting and reporting for grants and donor-restricted funds. 

  • Prepare financial reports for grant compliance and ensure funders’ requirements are met. 

  • Collaborate with program staff to monitor grant spending and ensure alignment with budgets. 

4. Internal Controls & Compliance 

  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial records. 

  • Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS 990 filings and audit requirements. 

  • Coordinate and oversee annual audits, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors. 

5. Team Leadership & Development 

  • Provide training and guidance on nonprofit accounting standards and best practices. 

  • Foster a culture of accountability and collaboration within the finance team. 

6. Cash Flow & Investment Management 

  • Monitor and manage the organization’s cash flow to ensure financial stability. 

  • Oversee investments, reserves, and endowments in alignment with the organization’s financial policies.

AZJHS preserves and celebrates the rich heritage of Arizona’s Jewish communities, educates the public about the Jewish historical experience including the Holocaust, and promotes awareness of our state’s diverse history through arts, culture, and educational programming. Qualifications

Qualifications: 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s degree or CPA preferred). 

  • 5+ years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting. 

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting and reporting requirements. 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Proficiency in QBO accounting software, reconciliation with donor database (DPO) and advanced Excel skills. 

  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial management tools and grant reporting systems. 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • High attention to detail and organizational skills. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders. 

Certifications: 

  • CPA or CMA certification is strongly preferred.
